Principles

CFY’s work is built upon the following principles supported by the research literature and our own experience:
- Learning happens everywhere, and technology can enable greater use of time available outside the regular school day to improve educational outcomes.
- We are asset-based (we focus on what students, teachers and parents/families bring to the table, not on their shortcomings)
- Digital learning can increase student engagement and enable more individualized learning—critical factors in student achievement
- All families want their children to succeed. Low-income parents value their children’s academic achievement just as much as do high-income parents.
- All families can harness the power of computer technology to improve their children’s lives. Technology can be a powerful tool for improving the home learning environment and school-home connection when introduced with the right wrap-around programming—e.g. engaging educational software and educational web content, family and teacher learning workshops, and technical support. This integrated approach to technology can give parents a new pathway to become more effective learning partners for their children. This approach can also enable children to become self-directed learners, avid readers, excited mathematicians, and responsible citizens.
